1 CREATIVE EMBROIDERY BOOK, A COMPLETE GUIDE, ANNE SPENCE, 1976
In this stimulating volume Anne Spence reveals the enormous potential of embroidery as a means of self-expression and as an exciting art form. The book explores hand stitchery and simple machine stitchery, and provides a full and practical account, from preparatory work to completion, of the many effects that can be achieved with fabric applique and flat surfaces (applique, patch- work, and cutwork); padded and raised surfaces ( quilting, cardwork and three dimensional forms); folded and interrupted surfaces (pleats, gathers, frills, tucks, drawn and pulled thread work, and smocking). Stitchery, of course, can easily be combined with all these techniques to enrich them further, thus providing a complete vocabulary for evolving original and imaginative designs in fabric and thread. The techniques may be applied to functional items or to purely decorative pieces, whether two- dimensional (wall hangings and banners) or three-dimensional (soft sculpture). An important chapter on design, including sources of ideas and their translation into embroidery, encourages experiment with shape, color, and texture. Preparatory work and the basic methods common to all techniques are described in detail and illustrated with working drawings and photographs. Additional materials-leathers, beads, and raffia-may be incorporated to add interesting textural and tonal qualities. A final chapter on allied crafts, such as weaving on a frame loom, tie dye, and batik, suggests how these can be used in conjunction with stitchery and fabric techniques to extend creative embroidery far beyond its usual confines.

20 MARY MARTIN’S NEEDLEPOINT BOOK, MARY MARTIN, 1969
37 color plates f 4 black-and-white photo graphs 16 how-to drawings
This is Mary Martin as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, about to sing “I’m in love with a Wonderful Guy”-a great moment for Broadway, and for Mary Martin. But in this book she remembers South Pacific as the show during which she started her first piece of needlepoint-a 5!;2 -by 7!;2 -foot rug, which she finished two and a half years later in London while she was still playing in the same show. MARY MARTIN’S NEEDLEPOINT recalls highlights of her life onstage” and off, as she tells about making needlepoint for everyone from her children to Rodgers and Hammerstein, designing pieces for her homes in New York and Brazil, and working on it wherever career or private life has taken her-any- place from Vietnam on a Far Eastern tour to freighter trips which are her favorite kind of vacation travel. She has planned and stitched dozens of designs for husband and family, for many friends including producers, directors, composers, and fellow actors, and has concluded that the chief pleasure of needle- point is to know to whom you will give it when it is done. She has also made many pillows and rugs for her New York apartment, where they were photographed for this book. These are unusual pictures, for needlepoint is seldom shown as an integral part of interior decoration as it logically should be. Some of the most helpful information here concerns the planning of needlepoint designs for particular rooms. In her engagingly personal and practical way, Mary Martin is frank to say that one good reason for doing needlepoint is that it is easy. At the end of the book is an illustrated how-to section written especially for beginners, but containing as much as anyone needs to know to work on designs that range from simple first efforts to satisfyingly elaborate projects. The secret is that only minor variations on one basic stitch are used, even for the most compli- cated designs. The never-to-be-forgotten Peter Pan on both Broadway and TV, One Touch of Venus, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, most recently I Do! I Do!-these are just a few of Mary Martin’s great shows. With the same outgoing enthusiasm that has made her such a beloved star in all of them, she gives here an offstage account of the pleasures of needle- point that will make still more converts to the most popular kind of needlework being done today.
